20 months and 3 months...

here we are at 20 months and 3 months. it's been a busy few weeks, filled with trips, time at the beach, lots of play, and friends.

jasper, i'll start with you.  this month we went to western massachusetts to visit great grammie.  you loved the visit...
you gave great grammie lots of eye contact...
and then dozed under her loving gaze...
on the way down we stopped in to visit wes and ned.  this is the best picture that we captured.  too many moving pieces...
cousin emma sent you home with a duck rattle and maeve loves to play with it, too.  i couldn't get a picture with the duck without her shaking it like crazy...
you love looking in the mirror at your best friend.  you lock eyes, smile, coo, and move in closer...
you are the best sleeper.  my dream baby.  it is almost as if i can smell your sleepy smell when looking at this photo...
in your third month you let cousin eve know who is boss in the size department.  but she let you know who is boss in the hair department...
sometimes you look lots like maeve or like dad, but here you look just like popsie's side of the family...
you celebrated dad on father's day...
you let me take lots of cute closeups while resting on my lap...
we explored the beach...
you did lots of tummy time and studied your animal cards...
we took some beautiful walks around little john...
it takes you so much longer to fall asleep in the ergo on a walk now.  there is just too much to look at.  but eventually you usually submit...
you got a visit from new friends abe and benjamin...

you love your pacifier just as much as your sister did...
but when you smile with it in, you can see your little grin behind it, and then it always pops out...
i just love this picture of you.  those sweet blue eyes, that adorable shirt, and your little lips...
this month you bumbo-ed...
you still have the rolls and i don't think they are going away anytime soon...
we spend lots of time outside in the shade.  here were are laying in the grass on a blanket...
you love watching the action in the room during tummy time...
jasper, this month you weighed over 15 pounds, were in the 95th percentile and over for height, weight, and head circumference.  you go on crazy cooing and chatting spells.  you are starting to lose your hair.   you and i walked from home to ydc to pick up maeve many times.  you are a wonderful walking companion.  you went to ydc for two hours to try it out before i went back to work.  just three days later you had a terrible cold that we are still recovering from.  even with some sickness you are still so happy.  you love to snuggle and be held.  i'm so lucky.

and now for you little maeve.  you are still my little maeve even though you are a big sister because jasper is catching up quickly and you still seem so teeny.  oh but while you may be little in size, this month brought a whole new big girl our way…

nana found some adorable little popsicles for you to enjoy...
but this one was a tart lemon flavor...
we play a lot in the driveway with chalk...
you pretend to do hopscotch and when you say it it sounds like "hops-hop"...
this month you figured out how to do clips, so you snap away and then ask for our help to unclip...

you still love wearing shoes that are too big for you.  here you are with dad's work shoes...
you look like a gardening granny (no offense to any of our granny readership)...
i took you to the spear farm estuary and you found a huge stick that you carried around through the woods.  i love seeing you explore, find flowers, climb over things, and watching your face when you hear birds...
during our walk you got tired and needed to be carried to the car, but i was already carrying jasper.  we made it work!  dad thinks he can tell what you'll look like as a four year old in this photo...
we got up early one morning to be part of a photo shoot at little john.  you didn't want to get in the backpack, but once you were in you loved being up high and able to touch my hair.  you loved when the helicopter swooped over...
you love climbing the boat ramp at madeleine point...
and climbing rocks at daycare.  we forgot to pack a sweater/coat one day, so they just threw your extra long-sleeved onesie over your clothes.  you looks like an 80s aerobics instructor...
you have so much hair now.  crazy hair that you don't like brushed or put in ponytails and eyelashes for daaaaays…
on any given day in this last month you covered yourself in stickers...
you've stopped referring to hobbes as "woof-woof" and now you call him "hob"...
we went to toots, where you ended up with a HUGE ice cream and dripped all over your dada...
after ice cream we explored the play area and all the animals that live at toots...
the fourth of july was rainy rainy rainy.  we let you play outside and you loved splashing in the puddles, the rain on your face, and getting the piece of chalk wet.  dad took this video in slow motion of you getting soaked...

we got together with the wee mountains.  it was the first time that we were all together (every mama and kiddo) since cinch de mayo of last year.  in order to get you all to be in one place at the same time for a photo, we lined a bunch of graham crackers along the deck and it was a feeding frenzy…
it makes me smile...
we got out the parachute and you loved it and kept trying to hug it...
the days of you little ones laying down for the baby pinwheel pictures are a thing of the past.  you are all so active now...
and the party was capped off with popsicles.  you ate every drop of yours...
we hit up the portland farmer's market and also the deering oaks playground, where you were climbing all over the place...
watching the other kids...
and where we went down the twin slide together...
it's been the summer of water.  you love playing in your bucket and pool...
popping bubbles...
mowing the deck naked...
sitting to eat watermelon...
walking with watermelon...
and running with watermelon...
maeve, 20 months is amazing. your words and communication are so impressive.  you say so many names (pointing to everyone on the fridge), types of vehicles (tractor, bus, boat, bike, plane, momo, car), colors (which you don't always get right), and objects (all types of clothing, toaster, books, tray, cup, rock, tree, flower, chalk, chair, etc.).  you saw asa driving a green tractor at nana and poppies' house and still weeks later keep saying "ace" when we talk about tractors or as your answer when i ask "who is here?" or "guess who is coming to be with us today?" we taught you how to nod yes and it's so slow and funny…no seems to come easier.  you are obsessed with the books peter's chair and maisy's big book of amazing words…oh and any book by richard scarry.  you try to drink your bath water constantly.  you love the concept of brushing your teeth, but really just like licking the toothpaste and playing with the water and sucking on the brush.  you enjoy the water table and the sandbox at school.  you say "no no" when you don't want to go to someone or meet a new adult, which i think is awesome…because you just need to get comfortable with people.  we started separating milk and sleep/naps.  you didn't like that much at all, but now you only occasionally ask.  you no longer drink out of bottles at all.  you take a short one hour nap at daycare most days, but longer ones when at home.    you are sprouting some new teeth.  and my dear, you are busy...always. on. the. move!

and now for some photos of the together times.  we do lots of supervised floor play...
we did the two stroller ll bean trip and had to put you guys by the big boot...
we love our walks to the beach...
we had a visit from cousin eve.  this is our first cousin shot.  maeve, it was taken moments before you leaned in to give eve a gentle head bump (your way of giving a kiss) and she grabbed your hair…
we took two trips to pemaquid to see dee dee and papaw.  we spent lots of time outside.  by the pool...
trying out the boat...
enjoying a walk to the float...
hanging on the patio with dee dee...
posing for a pemaquid gang next generation photo.  maeve, you were too preoccupied with jasper sitting in what you think is your seat to even look at the camera...
buddies...
our first family of four photo i think...
you guys got to meet cousin logan...
we went to little beach...
snuck onto a big private beach...
and also went to pemaquid beach...
maeve your toes looked liked they had been dipped in glitter from the shiny sand...
beach bums...
jasper, you did lots of floor play...
while dada and maeve explored...
and all the busy action and the sun made for this...
we also took two trips to rockport to see nana and popsie (whom you currently call papa, maeve).  we visited the belted galloways...
took the mailbox obsession too far...
sat in the big chair...
chatted with popsie...
met andre the seal...
went to the children's library in camden...
we ate more ice cream...
we played in the little house in the woods.  maeve, you LOVED it in there playing with the kitchen utensils and pretend food...
we collected stones...
and snuggled up...
watched the waves crash...
and let the sound lull someone to sleep...
as my maternity leave came to a close, we lived this month to the fullest and had so many adventures.  i get glimpses of where we are headed, but i'm still blown away.  every. single. day.  maeve, all of your communicating is just the most incredible thing to witness.  jasper, your smile and that round face get me every time.

i have these two very specific moments from each of my pregnancies that stick with me as these defining moments where i think "that was maeve in there" and "that was jasper with me"…maeve, for you it is the fact that it was you inside me when i was dancing around while swimming/bobbing in the pool on that summer day.  jasper, for you it is that you were there with me up on stage for my opening remarks at the portland screening of girl rising.  these moments float through my mind so often.  i think it is because i am in disbelief that you came from me.  it's easy to forget that i carried each of you for 9+ months because it seems like an absurd and impossible thing now that you are on the outside, living in the world as your own beings, and thriving.   haven't you both always been here?

20 and 3.  awe.  disbelief.  gratitude.  my hardest day parenting yet…and yet to see someone running around the trampoline laughing uncontrollably or to get that wide smile while nursing or to know that you are on someone's mind because they say "mom…mama…mum mum…ma…mama" on repeat...it is beyond.

lead the way…i can't wait to see what is next for us! xo.

  1. Beautiful, Jill!! I love that you think about the times that they were with you and you realize later it was actually THEM. I think about that all of the time. I especially think about when I was in Paris, riding the tour bus around at 7.5 months pregnant and took a picture of my belly to "prove" Baby Santana was there. That was Alexia!! Just like you said, it's like she was always here... Can't wait to see you this week and catch up. You're doing great, Mama!!
