dinner with friends...

tonight i'm meeting friends for dinner at the blue spoon...a sweet little restaurant in the east end.  it's small and cozy...and the food is always just right.  we've made an early reservation and we'll probably close the place down.  it's okay...we'll tip the waitress really well.  it's me and three others and just thinking about it makes me so happy.  the kind of happy where a smiles comes to my face, my shoulders pull up towards my ears, my eyes squint shut, and my hands make fists that just want to shake.

i anticipate laughter, tears, and a conversation that goes on and on.

common things...

this weekend was filled with great things, common things, that made for a very happy few days.  friday evening it was a big living room filled with friends and a skeptical two year old.  saturday morning it was a slow run on little john with hobbes.  over the rest of the day and night on saturday it was seeing o's happiness at inheriting russ' old nyc cruiser, blankets on a lawn for a potluck picnic, connecting with other mamas or soon-to-be mamas, parking it right in front of a big bowl of guacamole, sitting for the ingrid michelson concert (it was so beautiful), the cup of ice that i had to put between my knees to stay cool in the warm theater, the perfect rain when we got outside of the show, and late night pizza at otto's.  sunday it was running into a dog that we haven't seen in months that hobbes loves to play with on our walk, overpriced fresh orange juice that was worth every penny, a lazy morning on the couch watching the olympics, hours of napping as the rain came, and a low-key dinner with friends.

henry ward beecher you had it right...life is about finding happiness in the common, in the everyday.

a weekend of fun love...

this weekend is the weekend...it is as though all of our summer plans fall on one big weekend.

we'll be visiting with friends from new york and then heading to a send-off party, a baby shower, a birthday party, a concert of a favorite, chebeague, and then a dinner to see lots of wonderful friends.

amidst all of that, i hope to sneak in some olympics.  when i think summer olympics i think gymnastics...1992. i was obsessed.  i still might be.

what's your favorite summer olympics sport?

paint...

let's hop in the time machine just to remember how terrible the walls were in the baby room, as evidenced above.  and now...
calm and beautiful.  as you can tell the color looks more green and more grey depending on the light.  oh but look at the start of the nook.  it used to be painted primary colors and it may not look like much now, but i promise it will...
and our room is looking pretty sharp as well.  hello lemon sorbet (which i'll point out was on the same color swatch strip as a color called american cheese...so gross)...
i'm excited to wake up in a room so sunny and bright...and filled with plants (last carload pick up was yesterday and we have so many plants now)...
if you are in maine and looking for a wonderful painter who is quick, affordable, and just a generally lovely person, then drop me an email!

we are making progress.  actually, o has worked to hard to allow us to make progress.  i'm just still bossing around and backseat renovating.

a jungle...

yesterday i picked up a carload of plants from my former boss and his partner.  each plant had a story and many had previous owners who worked for the organization that i work for.  i loved it.  i loved knowing that i was getting plants that have been well loved, and sung to, and will make me think of martin and russ in many moments.  from one loving home to another...
i woke up this morning and saw them in our kitchen and smiled from ear to ear.  these make me happy. they make our house green!  we're going to need lots of green thumbs!

today...

today means waking up in the middle of the night to rain, having one of those peeing in your dream dreams without peeing the bed (just me?), a muddy walk with hobbes followed by a swim, the rooms upstairs getting a facelift with some pretty paints, getting my car back from the shop (got badly keyed last week in my parking garage at work), fun event planning at work, lunch with the happiness project book group from work, checking things off the list, picking up a bunch of well loved plants as their owners prepare for an overseas move, and a birthday celebration for a friend.

what about you?  what is today?

taking shape...

o did major work on the upstairs of our house this weekend...and the painter arrives tomorrow to do the two bedrooms.  that is going to feel like major progress, even though there is still no toilet, shower, sink, or flooring up there.  i made some progress on my list.  i worked all weekend doing laundry, cleaning, cooking, and crafting a gift for a new little one.  and after hours at young's furniture, where i found what i love, i'm experiencing sticker shock over the cost of a simple couch, two chairs, and two ottomans.  this is one of those things in life that i didn't understand the cost of.  therefore, i couldn't do it, so that didn't get checked off my list.  but i am going to continue the hunt this week.

anyways, back to the progress on the second floor...i've been brainstorming about the closet nook that we are going to make.  there is a big huge with two sets of doors, i'm thinking the left side will just be a little nest with pillows and books and space to be cozy.  then i found the beanbags seen above that look like stones and i got all dreamy.

you see...the room is painted a half shade of the yolo color called water (sort of greeny grayish).  the dresser i found at brimfield is going to be repainted and this weekend i found the guy who is going to make the drawer pulls out of stones from the workshop beach.  sort of like this, but with stones with lines that we brought back from the beach...
it's going to be simple up there...whites, greys, and greeny gray...and i can't wait to see it come together.  my friend tracy is a sewing wizard and she's offered to help make some things.  my mind is spinning with ideas.

things are slowly, but surely taking shape!  including me...this baby is growing a lot and last night was moving more than ever.

no rides for the pregnant lady...

last night we had some friends over for dinner and then we went to locals night at the yarmouth clam festival. $20 all you can ride.
i'm not a ride person, especially when pregnant...so i along with some friends watched as o and courtney hit the rides.
they spun, and twisted, and flew around.  i was dizzy just watching!  but smiling as their faces flew by each time.
ahhh but no rides for the pregnant lady, especially this crazy ride...
i'm so glad that our children will have a dad who is ready to hop on whatever ride comes into town with the carnival (scary!).

this weekend i'm headed to the parade with christina and amelia, working on house stuff, trying to create more room in what feels like an ever shrinking (and rapidly expanding) torso, playing board games, registering for baby items, and hopefully buying our couch!  what about you?

life...

this morning i woke before my alarm, got my running/slow jogging clothes on, and headed out the door with hobbes.  the humidity has passed and the tide was low as we ran around little john.  it was on of those maine summer mornings...clear, the perfect temperature, with smells of summer.

i got home and hit the blueberry bush.  yesterday a sweet friend gave me a box of fresh maine raspberries.  i rinsed the fruit, poured a bowl of life cereal, added the fruit, and enjoyed a delicious breakfast.

this morning was simple and ordinary...and wonderful!

a new 'do...

and i'm getting a new 'do today too...and by new 'do i mean two inches trimmed off! living large!

workin' girls...

a few weeks ago while climbing on the shore with hobbes, i spotted the perfect piece of driftwood.  i've been dreaming of having a driftwood tree vertical in the corner of a room for a while.  with the no heavy lifting business in pregnancy, i feared my dream may have to wait.  but then my friends jill and jersey arrived.  they took turns with the saw and then launched it up onto their shoulders.  team sneakers, colored shorts, blue shirts was off.  they carried a tree, for real...
and were kind enough to pose for a picture...
and they loaded it in their car.  we had a full ride with a tree, the two of them, hobbes, and a pregnant lady.  the orange warning flag at the end was the kerchief that hobbes had around his neck after his trip to the groomer, which came in handy.
it was a slow ride back home and now i'm already imagining all the places it might go!  there aren't many friends that would carry a tree out of the woods for 20 minutes on the hottest day of the summer, but jill and jersey aren't your typical friends!  thanks ladies!

workin' man...

this weekend was hot and super humid in maine.  the kind of weather where you sweat just being.  it was not ideal weather for sanding the walls and ceilings on our hot second floor, but o was up there and such a trooper.  the dust was literally caked on him, his hair looked grey, and it just sounded terrible.  he's working away getting things ready.  o was also the one out pushing the mower for hours on sunday and up in the middle of the night when amidst the rain storm i feared my car windows were open (they weren't...phew).  thank you o, your work is so very appreciated!

our next step is a good clean before a painter comes in.  we've decided on paint colors and i'm ready to channel all of my frustration at not being able to help into being the one that puts together the small list of items we need for the baby, makes a decision and finally buys the couch and chairs that we've been waiting on for years, and plans the work days that we are going to have where people can come over and help.

i've also dreamt of having a huge piece of driftwood in our house, almost like a tree in the edge of a room.  this weekend step two of that process happened.  step one was finding the driftwood.  i'd done that.  step two was going and getting in...sounds easy.  tomorrow i'll share just what that process entailed and the sweet ladies that made it possible.

how was your weekend?

bluebs...

earlier this year we planted two high bush blueberry plants in our side yard.  when i came back from france last week things were happening.  big blue babies!  easy to pick.  and now i want to plant bushes everywhere!

mr. hobbes gets the ones that are factory seconds and he's cool with that.  i've been eating them just plain after a quick rinse. sorry new jersey...i'm not buying yours anymore.

a reunion with hobbes...

o's parents took hobbes while we were in paris.  they loved him well and even sang happy birthday to him on his second/fourteenth birthday.  i met them on saturday to get hobbes.  as i was driving the meeting spot i saw a woman walking a dog.  i thought to myself "that dog is huge" and then realized it was o's mom and the huge dog was hobbes.  he looked huge because he'd just had a bath and was all fluffed up...and because he's huge.

it was a sweet reunion and we've enjoyed lots of walks in the woods and dips in the ocean to make up for our time away.

paris (part two)...

we spent one morning in paris at the pompidou...and then referred to each other as pompidou for the rest of the day.  i loved the colors and patterns...
i also loved dreaming up a children's book set in paris with hobbes...
i loved our lunch in luxembourg gardens...
i loved riding the metro (i know! me! loving public transportation!)...
i loved that little dog in the cafe during the rain storm...
i loved o's expressions when he touched the metro pole and when i suggested his next car choice...
i loved how we made up street names/botched french words...
i loved looking around for baby names on signs, menus, and in stores...
i loved this trip.

paris (part one)...

we are back from a wonderful time in paris.  i feel like i was there for a while and oh how sweet it was to be joined at the end by o.  we cruised around on boat, foot, and metro...we covered some ground.  a pregnant lady on the move.
we went to museums and churches, sat in parks and cafes, and went on boat rides and on walkabouts.  we did some typical paris things...
we smiled and laughed a lot...
oh and we ate. i must have consumed a baguette a day.  and o was a jet lag trooper with little and big coffees along the way...
it was nice to be away and it was nice to be home together yesterday.  we learned new things about each other and were reminded why we choose to spend our life together.  it was a great trip and a special get away.
