rosemary...

Rosemary in a jar
yesterday i said farewell to a friend that is moving to denmark.  her apartment was all packed up, but she set aside a few things for me to go through.  i took some things because i loved them and some because they'd help me remind me of her...now i have my lauren shirt, my lauren scarf, and some lauren wrapping paper.

before i left she gave me a beautiful potted rosemary plant as a symbol of remembrance.  so as i walk past my plant i'll think about her great sense of style, how her eyes squint when she smiles, her invention of the high five, the way she so effortlessly created a community, and her sense of adventure.

lc, we miss you already...and i can't wait to visit!

stargazing...

Constellation Cassiopeia & Andromeda Galaxy, Imaged from Mount Revelstoke National Park, BC
construction is underway in our white room...in a big way.  the crew is incredible, hard working, and get so much done each workday...i'm beyond impressed.  it's exciting to come home from work each day and see what they've done.  last night o and i arrived home at around ten.  i pulled into the driveway and stood in the driveway looking up at the stars...they were incredible last night.  anyways, i went inside and found o standing in the middle of the white room also stargazing.  a huge chunk of the roof was cut off/open to make room for the dormer.  i loved standing in the white room and also being outside.  hobbes was so confused...am i outside?  or am i inside?  did you see stars in your part of the world last night?

more construction photos soon.

100+ degrees...

this past weekend was really hot.  we swam, got ice cream/frosty dog treats, ate lots of fruit, tried to stay in cool places, and attempted not to wilt.  hobbes was more cuddly than ever...nothing says staying cool like a hot dog laying against you and breathing six inches from your face.

o captured this picture of me taking a nap on the futon with my friend.

maine...

i'm currently reading the book maine by j. courtney sullivan.  i wish i could just spend the day reading it in a hammock in the shade...with a bowl of raspberries, blueberries, and watermelon tucked by my side.   i imagine hobbes would come by and give me a little push in the hammock for a blueberry treat.  oh maine...you are love.  also, i think o has a crush on the girl on the cover of this book, he loves a good maine woman!

signage...

we've been collecting the perfect pieces of driftwood around little john island and i've been busy making signs for our wedding.  i'm pretty proud of the overflow sign, because i made it outside at dusk and was getting attacked by mosquitos.  i've made a few others, take a look...

for parking (looks like a child wrote it)...
for the wedding venue...
oh driftwood...so pretty!

i'm also dreaming of driftwood sculptures with christmas lights wrapped around them.  sounds sort of hideous, but i think i can make it work! i'm on a crafting bender, which is healthier than my recent ice cream bender.

loving cousins island...

lately i keep getting hit with i love cousins island moments...they are wonderful!  i love...the cool breeze coming across the bridge, seeing all the people fishing off the bridge, kind neighbors, sunsets at madeleine point, and swims with hobbes.  oh but my most favorite summer moment yet happened just a few days ago...there was a guy walking along the sidewalk in front of our house with his dog when the chebeague transportation bus approached filled with passengers.  the bus stopped.  the guy walking his dog looked perplexed.  the driver flung out a dog bone, closed the door, and drove off.

happy weekend...hope you're finding lots of love in your world right now!

a book of questions...

in my craft room, which i've decided to call the workshop, i have a box labeled 'random stuff to keep' and inside is...a bunch of super random stuff that i have to keep.

on thursday i pulled out a bunch of items from the box, took an unused journal, and got creative.

i've made a few of these journals before for friends.  i write and draw on the pages and then write a question or ask them to finish a statement...or sometimes have them do a task.  at the end i ask them to send it back to me. i  have so much fun making these...and even more fun reading them when they are filled out.

it's amazing what i've learned about my friends when i get to read these journals...also the way in which they fill them out always seems to fit their personality.

the one i made on thursday will travel to a far away land...and will hopefully find it's way back to me.

so i'll leave you with a question to answer...if you could invent a triathlon of any kind what would the three events be (in order).

morning chores...

while on vacation last week, i spent each morning doing some work around the outside of our house...and i really really loved it.  i loved getting up early, taking hobbes for a walk, and then getting some chores done before it became super hot outside.

on wednesday and thursday i ripped the shingles off the back of our house in preparation for our renovation.  on thursday i cleared some weeds and moved hobbes' dog house across the lawn to a cooler location.  by friday i was ready for something big.  i did a little painting and then i went for it.  remember how yesterday i told you to take note of the tree in the photos i posted?  well i took it down with just a pair of loppers and a saw.  crazy dog lady becomes, well...hmmm...maybe just crazy!

i hauled it off into the woods and then had to saw the trunk down, which was the hardest part...
oh i loved all the time i had to think while doing these chores...and there is nothing like taking a cool shower when you are super filthy and covered with dirt after some hard work.

(side note: it feels strange to title this post morning chores, because 'do your chores' is the command we tell hobbes when we want him to go pee outside!)

just like new...

remember the awesome table that was painted horribly that i found at the swap shop a few weeks ago?

well this bad girl got a facelift last week.  i was able to transform her into something wonderful for a total of zero dollars.  i scraped the paint off...
then i slapped on some exterior paint i found in the basement.  look at her now...
she's picnic ready, wouldn't you say o?

oh and please take note of the tree in the top photo (the tree on the left)...more to report on that girl tomorrow.

love all around...

i got a rip in my stretch pants a while ago and the other day i looked down and realized that the rip was really a little heart.  a small reminder of love/a pasty white leg display window.  i also found a little place on our granite front step where the water pools and makes a heart.

love...it's everywhere!!

drifting...

i'm on vacation for the rest of the week...i'll be drifting along and around.  there will be some sure things like getting hobbes a haircut and sending out our wedding invitations...and there will be lots of time to simply float.  i feel like i want to simultaneously do a million projects and just sit in an adirondack chair in the back yard and be.  i'll be back on monday with tales of these next few days.

picnic...

picnic
tonight (if the weather cooperates) i'll be joining two friends for a picnic on the rolling hill of the eastern prom.  it won't just be any picnic...there will be breads and spreads and cool drinks and catching up and talking about what's next as the boats come and go.  we'll toast a friend as she prepares for a move to a land far away.  aside from the moving away business, what could be more fun than a summer evening picnic with friends?

shadows...

the other night i climbed into bed.  o was brushing his teeth, so while i waited with the light on in our bedroom i started making hand/shadow/finger puppets.  i can't remember doing this since i was a kid.  o came in the room and the silliness continued.  my best was a turtle and o's best was a swan. we're perfecting the technique.

anyways...it was fun. grab a lamp and get to it!

home renovation...

here is a before picture of our big white room.  i took a bunch, but they aren't really worth sharing.  just imagine a really big white room with lots of white painted brick and panelling...oh and a filthy rug.  on tuesday we started ripping this apart for our upcoming redo of the space.  hooray.  o tackled the panelling and i ripped up the rug...
my favorite thing that afternoon was finding the drawings behind the panels...especially this one with the traced hand of little diane belesca.  we've decided we are going to try to track her down somehow and give her this piece of the wall.
here's to some new life in an old room!  i'll keep you posted with photos as we go!

favorites...

i love this photo of my guys from this past weekend.  they are my favorites!

and i really love this photo that i found of them on o's phone this past weekend...
doesn't it seem like hobbes has just seen the most terrifying thing that o has no idea is there?

i friggin' love these two crazy boys!

p.s. guess who got their marriage license?

a long weekend...

this four day weekend was the best and filled with almost all of the summery things listed on the 2011 geary's summer ale bottle!  we had a blast.  we went on short boat rides, went kayaking, saw friends, laughed alot, and so much more.  there were lots of good and colorful meals...
there was time spent on the float...
swimming and running and chilling with this guy...
oh and some sparklers with o's family...
it was relaxing and silly and wonderful.  long weekends are wonderful, but super long weekends are the best!!!

july 3, 2010...

happy friday friends.  can you believe it's 4th of july long weekend time already!?!  this is an exciting time of year...and we have lots to celebrate.  aside from big things like independence, we have two small (but sort of big) things to light some sparklers for on july 3rd.

on sunday we'll celebrate hobbes first birthday.  he went from weighing just 15 ounces to over 65 lbs. in just a year.  way to go hobbes.  we're thinking that a day spent jumping off the dock in new harbor and playing by the ocean will be just the party he deserves.  oh and maybe a stop at dunkin donuts for a munchkin, too.

a year ago this weekend i lost my entire fingernail on my right middle finger by slamming it in a door.  gag.  wretch.  click here if you need a refresher.  so the second things i'm celebrating is that over the past year it's been slow going, but my very damaged nail bed (with a little help from surgeon dr. flaherty) grew a nail.

here's to growth!  love you hobbes and love you fingernail!
