ba-na-na...

i love bananas, but only if they are just ripe.  once they get spotty i get grossed out by the texture.  i used to just throw them in the freezer and claim i was going to make banana bread....which never ever happened.  so we had a freezer of black/brown bananas.  enter hobbes, who loves bananas in any form.

on sunday afternoon i peeled the bananas, chopped them up, put them on a tray, and popped them in the freezer.  now mr. hobbes has icy cool banana treats for these hot summer days.  and with that last sentence i officially just became a crazy dog lady.  awwww-yeah.

canine playtime...

hobbes and i had a weekend filled with doggie friends.  on saturday we drove up to rockport for some time with nikita and jules.  on the way home we made a pit stop in new harbor to visit kili.  on sunday nikita came for a visit to cousins island.  for hobbes it was a weekend of drool covered necks, climbing all over other dogs, wrestling, playing, and hard sleeping.  i took a blurry action shot that absolutely captures the weekend...

a dress...

on saturday i arrived home to a mailbox full of goodness.  three things actually.  first, was a sweet note and magazine from a friend in dc.  she saw the short dress on the front and had to send it along.  thanks drea!  i was just thinking of drea and her family earlier that day when i walked into the space where our wedding is going to be because it smelled exactly like their house on cider hill road.  it took me back.

next was a postcard reminder for my upcoming teeth cleaning.  hooray...i love going to the dentist!

and last was this simple package that contains the dress that i am 93% sure i am wearing for my wedding.  the remaining 7% depends on the potential wonders of a pair of spanks.  i'll keep you posted.
speaking of posted...leave me a comment or send me an email if you want a little love delivered to your mailbox.  have a great day!

he arrives...

on friday afternoon guess who arrived into the world?  little wes...to proud parents jay and em.  look at that rib cage and belly.  love.  rumor has it that jay waited 24 hours before he whispered into wes' ear something about what an incredible skier he's going to be...and how wes is going to smoke any and all sadyer kiddos in future ski races.  until that day, o and jay will keep putting me and em up against each other on the sugarloaf race course.

let's just hope that wes screams less than we do...

a sleepover...

we had a sleepover last night at christina's...just hobbes and the ladies.  we had so much fun and just wait until you see what christina designed for me...i squeal just thinking about it!  this morning we awoke to the classic rainy day and had to pull ourselves out of bed to go to work.  hobbes is spending this rainy one at happy tails...running and wrestling his energy out!

tonight...comfy clothes, baked potatoes for dinner, and early to bed.  is it 5pm yet?

craving...

strawberries_pint.JPG
this weekend i plan to buy a few quarts of strawberries.  i'm hoping to eat them morning, noon, and night.  i'm imagining strawberries with greek yogurt and some granola, in a smoothie, on a board with a baguette and some cheese, on a spinach salad with mango and almonds oooh and goat cheese, with cereal as a late night snack....and a few just plain!

berry season...i love you!

they say you have to ask...

dear universe,
it is time for me to buy a car.  i haven't done this in a while...actually never on my own.  this feels overwhelming.  how do i make sure i don't get ripped off or end up with a car that looks nice but is really a piece of crap?  we just want a nice, but used, subaru outback.

universe i know what you are thinking...a subaru?  in maine?  just like every third car on the road?  yes it's true...we want something reliable, safe in the winter, and with a place to put hobbes.  any color (i'm pretty sure i mean this) will be great.

in advance thank you for send a kind person selling a gently used subaru outback at a fair and reasonable price in our direction.

xo,
driver of a lovely (but aging and in declining health) 1996 honda civic

jars of love...

at the retreat we each had a glass jar.  during our time small notes, small bits of nature, and general kindness were added in.  at the end of our time we put the lids on the jars and packed them up.  we each opened our jar once we were home.  capsules representing a time and place.  jars of love.
i loved looking out the window during meals to see our jars lined up.  i loved filling the glasses of others.  i loved opening my jar when i got home.

speaking of filling the glass...fill your glass full of sun on this the longest day of the year!  happy summer solstice!

sky meadow...

this weekend at sky meadow retreat center in vermont exceeded every expectation and hope that i had.  the group, the weather, the conversations, the food (oh the food!), and the overall experience.  it was truly incredible...just everything!  i carry it with me on my slow transition back to the real world.

today...

today i leave for a retreat in vermont with seven lovely ladies.  i am excited to inhale the fresh air, sleep in the gorgeous barn, spend time with these women, eat the delicious food...and to just be.

i'll take some photos to share next week.

what about you?  what are you doing this weekend?

yes...

i look at this photo and think yes.  yes.  yes.  yes! The wooden dock, cool water, rolled up jeans, fresh fresh fruit, and summer weather.  the only thing i think no about in this photo is the massive knife.  otherwise, yes!

right now i think i could eat that entire bowl.  raspberries alone are enough...the rest is just a delicious added bonus!

it's wasn't pretty...

so friends, you've heard we are getting married...and we are really excited!  i've started looking for dresses.  i'm hoping for shorter than the average wedding dress, casual, and beautiful...this is no simple task.  somehow the options seem to be either really long, or really really short, or too poofy.  i'm remain hopeful and i've got ladies on the hunt for me!

anyways, i popped into a local dress store yesterday to see what they had.  the sales clerk convinced me that i might like long dresses and that i should try.  maybe she was right?  or maybe i should have bolted at that point.

i knew it was time to go when i got stuck in one of the dresses.  i nearly ripped the dress as i broke into a full sweat as i tried to wrestle my way out of it, while the woman stood outside listening to me grunt. she offered to help, but i couldn't let her see me or her precious dress in such a state...and then there came a time when i had no choice but to let her in.

it's official...i remain a short dress girl.

summer list...

i've been thinking about my summer to do list lately and here are just a few of the things i want to be able to check off by the end of september...

  • marry my booooooyfriend
  • go strawberry and raspberry picking
  • make jam or jelly
  • swim in the ocean
  • find a tick free field to lay in and constellate (you know...stargaze)
  • take hobbes swimming often
  • share my flowers with friends and co-workers
  • eat tomatoes and cukes from the garden
  • have enough change in my wallet to get an ice cream from the ice cream truck when it drives by
  • play basketball in the driveway at dusk with o
  • hit up the farmers market every week
  • teach hobbes some new tricks
  • paint our upstairs bedrooms
  • cross the finish line of the beach to beacon with my guy (we generally have erratic pacing issues...and by we i mean me)
  • eat dinner outside
  • read at least three books
  • have some good laugh attacks
  • not shut my finger in a heavy door
  • fruit and veggie smoothie up my mornings
  • try to be less cranky in the heat (this may be a challenge in "her majesty" my 1996 honda civic with windows that don't roll down)
  • wear lots of skirts and flip floppers
  • have a dance party
  • and have picnic lunches with friends
what about you? what is on the list for this summer?

friends and a big yardsale...

this weekend two of my dearest friends are coming for a visit.  applause!  applause!  we plant to talk lots, take long walks with hobbes, eat yummy food, and do a cool project.  in super exciting news...tobi and i are going to hit maine's biggest yard sale tomorrow morning.  i'll be scooping up old jars, funky old table cloths (christina does that make you want to gag?), and hopefully a few other cool items i can rework into our wedding. we're going for a simple, snappy casual, picnic meets farmer's market feel.  so watch out fellow yardsalers...i'm on the hunt!

swap shop...

we found this table at the swap shop at our transfer station this past weekend.  it's a great table that just happens to have been painted in a truly horrible way.  o strapped it to the top of the car, while i dreamed about what color to paint it.

for now a simple tablecloth has transformed things...

it's probably a good thing we don't have a truck and that i am not familiar with the trucker's hitch...or else i would be gathering old crap left and right!

plants...

over the weekend i planted lots of flowers (thanks to my dad) in pots, raked, surveyed the gardens, did some weeding and watering, and scrubbed underneath my fingernails.  while i was away in vancouver everything popped!  check it out...

my garden is coming together slowly.  my cukes, pumpkins, and peas are taking off..and as you can see i still have some items to get in the ground...
around the house and along the yard are lots of flower beds...all perennials, which are so lovely!  there were so many moments this weekend when i'd look from a different angle and fall in love all over again with our house.

a heart of glass...

friends!  look what arrived at our house over the weekend...a sweet light blue seaglass heart.  this makes me want to take today off from work, be by the sea, have a picnic, and hunt for other ocean treasures.  oh a girl can dream!

going for a ride...

lately any time a car door (or trunk) opens hobbes jumps right in.  it's sweet.  this guy loves riding in the car...or even just relaxing in a parked car.  on sunday night, christina and andrew came over for a bbq.  when they got ready to leave hobbes wiggled his way into their backseat...
i think the jumping in cars business is the combination of a potential adventure, general excitement, the prospect of getting hang his head out the window, and food motivated crumb hunting.  all this talk about dogs and cars reminds me...if you haven't already, you should read the art of racing in the rain.  i read it while in vancouver and loved it!

stanley park...

today during my break from work i rented a bike and rode the perimeter of stanley park.  the path along the seawall winds over five miles along the water.  it was wonderful...to feel the air, to be outside of the convention center for an hour, to not be in my work shoes, to see this incredible green space, to get some exercise, and to explore around vancouver.

i saw a few people on tandem bikes and smiled thinking that o would resist renting one of those, but if we did rent one we'd have the silliest time.  i thought of o and hobbes at many points during my ride.

it is amazing how much of an energy boost i got from my cruise around the park.

where the heart is...

vancouver is so beautiful...the water, the mountains, and the super kind canadians.  this country mouse is having a lovely time in the big city!

oh but home...you are stitched deep in my being.  you are where my heart is.  it's something i know, but something i am reminded of every time i am away.
