at dusk...

on sunday night o was running out to get dinner.  he popped his head back in the house and told me i should go outside and just walk around the yard.  i went out.  the sun was just setting and the sky was a purply gray haze.  the air was a teensy bit warm.  the grass actually looked green.  there were the sounds of birds and chirpers...and other things i couldn't identify.  as i looked back at our house, the gray shingles against the glow of the interior lights through the windows was so pretty.

and last night when i got home, i looked out and the grass is so green!

i got a twinge of what it's going to be like to experience our first summer at this house.  oh and it was really exciting.

a dog kind of weekend...

o took this great photo of hobbes this past weekend.  this was one of the few times he wasn't running around through the woods collecting ticks, playing by the sea, or wrestling with his dog cousins.  he played so much that he was exhausted...but he couldn't stop.  this past weekend was as good as it gets for a dog.

oooh and hobbes even found one of the papier mache eggs during the easter egg hunt...and delivered it to o!

oh hobbes, you are a love.  o, you are also a love for taking my favorite photo of hobbes.

papier mache...

my dad is on a papier mache kick.  it's awesome!  for easter he made a bunch of eggs and asked me to paint them.  we decided to make these eggs the numbers for the easter yankee swap.  during the hunt, each person would only be allowed to pick up one of these babies.  anyways...after painting cabinet doors for weeks, painting these eggs (and em's belly) was much more fun!
after getting everything numbered, i added a little bit of color...
it's so fun to hide all of the eggs.  as someone who is can sometimes get competitive when it comes to games (right tobi?)...it's nice to be the one hiding the eggs, so i don't have to get all crazy.  it's quite freeing!  crazy competitive gaming lady be gone!

what could emily be hiding?

oh you know...only the world's biggest easter egg...
we snuck upstairs when she first arrived and painted her belly like an egg, which was a genius idea that came to us on our day off together a few weeks ago.  isn't it amazing how much she looks like she swallowed a basketball in the picture below?
this was just one of the hundreds of things that made me smile and laugh on sunday.  lots of friends. some good old fashioned egg hunting.  yummy food.  tons of silliness.  love!

in preparation...

we had lots to do in preparation for our annual easter celebration.  we took two dozen gorgeous white eggs...
and used dye and rubber bands...
and made these pastel beauties...
we used these eggs to play an egg breaking game called knuckle and then had the ingredients to make lots of egg salad.  in addition to these eggs, we filled a hundred and fifty eggs for the hunt.  and i painted over twenty papier mache eggs (more on that later).  so many eggs!  it was one heck of an easter!

look what arrived in the mail...

on friday o's parents told us about the current issue of maine magazine.  their tone indicated that there was something in the magazine for us.  we hadn't seen the issue, so we went to the store and bought it.  over the weekend we scoured the magazine wondering what on earth they were referencing.
turns out we were looking at the april/wrong issue.

on wednesday, the may issue arrived in the mail from o's parents.  oh right...the wedding issue.  what's the opposite of a subtle hint?

t + d...we should have known!  thanks for your love and support.

signs of spring...

hobbes and i found a patch of daffodils amidst the brush and thorny bushes in our back yard.  we've cut so many bouquets and there are still more.  yesterday, moments before it rained and hailed, we rescued these signs of spring and brought them inside to brighten up our kitchen.  i took this photo last night...
we woke up today to flowers that opened in the wee hours of the morning.  i like to think that one second they were closed...and the next second they just popped open.

a playhouse...

a few weeks ago i was chatting with a friend about a play kitchen (costing under $20 to make) that another friend had constructed for her son.  during our conversation my friend expressed her desire to create an inexpensive little house for her son to play in.  i sent her a link to something i'd seen online using a table and fabric.  she used that as inspiration and look what she made...

oh just some little pockets inside to put kid stuff...

and a kid-sized window...

i'm so impressed by my friend's sewing skills...and i'm dreaming of an adult-sized playhouse!

special thanks to tracy for the photos!

a chebeague weekend...

from fresh pasta making to crazy glasses...
trashy magazines...
time with belle...
hobbes taking a place in the heart of the action...
birthday sparklers...
belly shots...
and belly scratches...
this weekend on chebeague was so much fun that it made coming home to a flooded basement not that terrible!

trash picker...

we went to the transfer station on sunday and i realized a few things...

first, i love it there.  while it's sad to see how much trash we make, it's at least nice to have a place that is trying with a swap shop, book barn, composting area, wood chipping area, recycling bins, goodwill containers, etc.

second, i love the separate piles of wood, metal...even porcelain (read: toilets).  i love like with like.

lastly, i have an idea of what my future holds...and it most definitely involves picking through piles at the transfer station.  who's in?

there may have been a paint fight...

after six long nights of painting our cabinets...it was inevitable.  there was some sass and there were some words.  i used my roller and he used his brush.  i'll admit i started it...the sass and the paint fight.  noses, hair, hands, necks...streaked with white from the war.  it washed away with some soap and water...and it made the remainder of the painting less bicker-filled and more fun.

hobbes may have felt a little left out, but don't worry...he dipped his tail in the paint tray earlier in the evening, so he's fine!

i knew i wasn't much of a painter...but man this project is really driving it home.  i can't wait to put on the last coat, pick the knobs and handles, and get these babies where they belong!

sunday fun day...

this guy and i spent sunday morning raking out our gardens.  we bought our house in november, so we had no idea what was out there.  as i pulled away old leaves and dead branches, i could hardly contain myself.  we have beautiful perennials--lilies, hydrangea, and a whole bunch of mystery stuff that is already growing.  i was overdressed in jeans and a shirt.  finding perennials means i'll be able to focus on my [fenced in] vegetable garden. i can almost taste the fresh tomatoes and cukes...and something tells me that hobbes can too!

the smell of the dirt and the warmth of the sun made for a wonderful sunday.  oh and did i mention that we also went for a great walk at twin brooks, i got to hold belle for over an hour, and we got to play with a ten week old boxer.  weekend equals love.

hiding...

when i reached my hands into my jacket pockets just before i left emily and jay's house on friday, i felt two little foil covered cadbury creme eggs that emily had place there for me to find.  so, i did what any good friend of a cadbury junkie would do...i took them out and hid them back in her apartment for her to find.

it kind of reminds me of the time we found an econo-sized box of condoms at fox's apartment and then proceeded to hide them all over while he ran out to the store.  we got creative...inside an aspirin bottle, in the compartment where you put the dish detergent in the dishwasher,  in the sugar bowl, inside a box of cereal. oh the list goes on and on.

anyways...hiding the eggs got me in the spirit for our annual easter egg hunt, which is coming up soon! anyone have any good suggestions for non-candy things to hide in eggs?  don't say condoms.

carmen san diego...

look what i bought on friday with em...it's a world map shower curtain!  it's the little things, i tell ya.  as a kid i played hours of the game where in the world is carmen san diego, which is why i think i love geography, maps, and this curtain so very much.

however, it was rare that carmen went to africa, so i am little rusty on my african capitals.  so, my goal is that by august first i'll be able to label all the countries and capitals on a map of africa.  i'm off to a good start with tunisia and it's capital tunis...as well as algeria and it's capital algiers.  i know about ten already, so i have a ways to go.

anyone want to join me in my quest?

boston...

Skyscraper and Church
i'm headed to boston for a work trip this morning.  concord trailways, pretzels, and a movie here i come.  after the conference i'm having a sleepover at em and stew's house.  em and i are taking friday off from work to hang out...we might garden, we might shop, we'll eat, there may be more ice cream involved.  i'm excited to take a little trip.  i haven't been to boston, a place that holds so so so many memories, in a long time.

i'm sure to get sappy and think about boston friends and of course mr. o.  oh and maybe i'll have a panic attack on the t to really get back in the boston spirit!

i'll be off tomorrow, but back on monday.  have a great weekend!

the craft room...

i'm loving my craft room.  the built-ins.  the storage.  the sunlight.  the colors.  i took the time to get organized when we moved in and now i can find whatever i'm looking for.  this is a really big deal, because i've always had a hard time balancing being creative without living in a craft explosion/mess.  my craft room is also where all my clothes are...and i finally got a hamper, which is also helping in a big way.

recently i've been very inspired...which is always the case with april.  i made a few things for the new little baby girl, i've been working on writing, and i'm already planning my next art project.  when is it the weekend again?

a dog's life...

hobbes had quite the weekend.  he loves the snow, so the over six inches on friday was a great start to a wonderful weekend that included a visit from dog cousin, nik (seen above) and boxer friend, gus.  i looked out the window on saturday to see the kids from next door teaching hobbes tricks in our driveway.
this weekend was the first time he put his whole head out the car window.   he looked like the happiest dog in the world with his nose twitching, eyes closed, and cool wind blowing over his face...
hobbes also had visits from other friends and time outside in the sun.  this is how i found him on sunday afternoon...zonked out on his toys in his crate snoring away.
he has the life!

new cabinets...

here is hobbes posing in front of our current cabinets.  below is peek at our kitchen (we painted the dark brown, but it looks black in this picture)..
we are in the process (it's a long one) of getting new cabinet doors.  so this weekend was spent sanding and painting...
we met the nicest guy at the paint store in yarmouth, who gave us some great tips...and matching xl benjamin moore t-shirts.
i was the roller and o was the brusher.  we still have a long way to go!
while i was sanding i realized that i don't have the patience or precision required to be a carpenter...or a baker.  so for now i'll keep rolling.  i'll post an after photo and see if hobbes will model again once we are done!

turn the handle...

i saw this gorgeous photo and immediately began imagining what could be behind such a beautiful door...a hidden gem of an antique shop.  a barn filled with little lambs bouncing around.  a bakery with a plate of warm chocolate chip cookies and glass of milk with ice cubes waiting for me.  a thrift store with wonderful cheap finds.  a rustic yoga studio.  a room with a big white bed with lots of pillows.  an alleyway that leads to a secret garden.  a used book store.  a gardening shed filled with terra cotta pots.  an abandoned art studio.  a super fun dance party.  a room with a bunch of friends from far away. a deck that leads to a desolate beach.  oh it's such a pretty door.

have a wonderful weekend.  o and i are painting our new cabinets, taking hobbes on some adventures, seeing some friends...and maybe shoveling snow!  what about you?
