car kit...

in an attempt to be ready for winter/best prepared, i made a kit for my car with all of the items seen above (side note: i'm going to get flares, a flashlight, an emergency blanket, a swiss army knife, etc. for the back of my car, too). and a  i tried to think about possible things that could happen and simple things to have in my car that could help.  say for example we visit friends who have a cat and o gets all sneezy...voila...claritin in the car kit.  or say i got stuck in traffic at the same time i had low blood sugar...pack of snacks.  and then i pulled everything together into this little tote i got at the angela adams sale last year...
making the kit felt a little random and sort of made me feel a little neurotic...but i also had fun!  what would your car kit have in it?

hobbes on holiday...

we are all on vacation this week...and it is so nice!  we are finding time to sleep late, tackle our to do list, see friends and family, eat lots, watch movies, and just be.  we've had snowy days and 50+ degree days.  it's been wonderful.  we're trying to savor it and not think too far ahead/into the future.

someone had a blast this holiday season...
hobbes is enjoying the pace of things and the extra loving this week...and so are we!

i listened to a great ted talk the other night that has me thinking about succulents...and succulence.
prettiness.  heartiness.  loveliness.
i'd love to have a wall in the house that was a succulent wall!  wouldn't that be amazing?

minute by minute...

the sun is now rising earlier...and setting later.  the days are getting longer.  minute by minute.  yes!  i'm vowing not to take those extra minutes for granted, but instead to savor the growing light!

game shows...

if i could plan my dream would include being on the price is right (circa 1987) to play plinko (with my dad in the audience), followed by a stint on current-day jeopardy (with o in the audience so i could give him a silly sign), then i would be transported to my next game in the cash cab (with my former boss and his partner...both trivia wizards!), and then my grand finale would be a chance to play 100,000 pyramid (with emily as my clue person and dick clark as the host).

what about you?  what game shows would you play?

hobbes and i took a cold walk on sunday.  we walked some trails in cumberland and then hit the beach.  brrrr.  oh but it was so beautiful.  there were about a hundred geese bobbing in the water as we walked up and down the beach.  i was struck by the patterns in the sand...

this looked like a brain...
this was the part of the walk where hobbes and i had a heart to heart about our christmas present for o...i can't wait to tell you about it.  just a few more days.
it was cold and wonderful.  crisp and so incredibly beautiful!

an old favorite...

Good Will Hunting
this weekend o and i watched good will hunting, which i haven't seen in years...but which i've probably seen fifty times.  this was one of the movies in college that i would put in at night if i couldn't fall asleep...that, center stage, and almost famous

i have a handful of favorite scenes/moments from this movie...when i think about them i wish there were more movies made like this.  you know, just good movies!  my favorite is the part where robin williams explains the first time he saw his wife. ah and most of the scenes with the gang from southie.  oh and boston movies, you know those always get me.

i think o's favorite part is where he lists his 12 brothers: marky, ricky, danny, terry, miley, davey, timmy, tommy, joey, robby, johnny, and brian.  i like it because it reminds me of when my mom lists the twelve garvey kids: kathy, eileen, anne, andy, maura, gumper, chrissy, michael, mark, meg, beth, billy.

what's your favorite scene?

last night i was wearing a winter coat in our house and wrapped in a blanket and my hands still felt like death/ice.  and out heat was on.  i'm not sure what is going on, but my fingers and toes just aren't staying warm.  when i grab at o's warm hands or accidentally put my cold toes on his warm feet the difference is crazy.

somehow this morning it is 47 degrees outside...our morning walk felt warm and i was sweating under my hat and coat.  so nice!

a lap blanket is now a mandatory winter accessory.  is it creepy/unprofessional to bring one to work?

a while back i read (on this blog) that the best way to store christmas lights is rolled up into a ball...rather than balled up in a knotted mess.  so last year i followed these instructions and it's true.  this tip made not only a glowing orb of light, but made putting the lights on the tree so simple this year.

i'd recommend this technique...or am i the last to know this tip?

p.s. abby you'll notice your dropcloth at the base of the tree. my folks just brought down the last box of "wedding stuff" and i found this in there.  i'll send it back soon, but not before we fill it with the spirit of maine and the smell of christmas!  hope that is okay! xo.

two dollar tree...

we got our christmas tree for two dollars.  not a typo...just two bucks!

when we moved into our house we got a ten dollar coupon in the mail for a greenhouse nearby as a welcome to the neighborhood.  then i joined the greenhouse's mailing list and they sent me a twenty dollar gift card.  and then the welcome wagon got confused and sent another welcome to the neighborhood.

so for just two dollars we scored the most perfect tree. we set it up, hobbes has been drinking from the tree stand, and it is finally starting to feel like the holidays!

freezer meals...

on saturday i decided to make a bunch of meals that we could freeze for the winter.  it's so nice to come home from a long day and have something to pop in the oven that is homemade and delicious without hours of work!

i made a bunch of stuffed shells filled with all kinds of veggies...kale, squash, sweet potatoes, swiss chard, leeks...and some ground turkey and ricotta cheese.

between these meals and the crock pot...i'm ready for winter!

p.s. we are almost at the shortest day of the year...just a week or so!

a post for boys (and girls)...

the other day someone was asking me about my blog and the discussion quickly turned to if it was a blog specifically for girls.  i say no...i know lots of great great guys that read my blog (thanks jedd, ian, o, dad).  but what do you think?  is my blog for girls and boys?

this is why i've decided to dedicate this post to the boys (and girls who like legos)...
don't these two photos just make you want to be a kid again/install a lego wall at your house?

o brought me back a little pixy back from copenhagen...and oh i just love it.  it is about six inches tall, with stripped legs, high-waisted knickers, a checkered scarf, and an adorable little smile.  with his bendable arms and legs and simply stitched smile it's just too much.

imagine how fun it would be growing up in scandinavia during the holidays.  i know i'm romanticizing things, but somehow it just seems more magical.

my dad and my brother came down this past weekend to help us with a project and they also brought us an incredible jade's huge!  three feet tall by three feet wide.  i love it and it has already transformed the room.  i'm also considering adding some red berries and calling it our christmas tree.  somehow with our forsythia bush blooming outside it is a little hard to get into the holiday spirit.

the perfect combo...

warning: this post may change your snacking habits.  on my last trip to trader joe's i got a container of mini peanut butter cups and a bag of peanut butter filled pretzels.  yum and yum.
i recommend popping them in your mouth at a one cup to one pretzel ratio...repeated a few (dozen) times.

happy snacking!

bild 060
right now o is in copenhagen.  i'm holding down the fort here, but keep finding myself wondering where he is and what he's seeing.  my mind hops on a bike and i imagine myself there.  i imagine touring around, pedaling, laughing, unnecessarily ringing the bell, and pulling over to pop into a cafe for a warm tea.  to know that o is in the same town as lauren makes me smile.  to know they shared know a familiar face.

copenhagen, i'm coming...sometime soon!

if you aren't going to make your own sauce...cough up the $9 (yeah you heard me...9 big ones) for a jar of rao's marinara sauce.  seriously, this stuff is delicious.  i know what you are's red sauce, how good could it be?  i'll tell you...the first time i ever had it was on chicken parmesan and it was unreal...memorable four years later.

worth. every. penny.

i owe special thanks to jay and em for introducing me to rao's!  thanks guys.

i love this letterpress woodblock table so much...mostly because it reminds me of the game boggle.  i think this table would drive o crazy...i can picture him with the old dustbuster sucking up the crumbs and dust that fell between the letters.  maybe it needs a piece of glass on the top?

i'm also loving soulemama's kitchen table...
rustic and beautiful and with space for lots of friends.  i imagine hobbes would use the bottom level as a secret dog compartment.

pretty pretty this wednesday morning!

while in new orleans, i was at an event with our staff from all over the world when i walked past a table set up by our staff in brazil.  i saw the ribbons instantly and i was suddenly eleven years old.  i was at an international camp when i was that age with a group from brazil and they had these bracelets/ribbons called "fitas".  i approached the table and asked for one.  my sweet co-worker pulled a crisp white ribbon and wrapped it around my wrist.  i made a wish each time she tied the knots to secure the band.  my eyes brimmed with tears and my vision got a little blurry.

i don't know if you can tell people the wishes you made, so i won't share them here.  all i know is that i need to wear this until it falls off...which can sometimes take years.  i'll let you know when the wishes come true...and when my fita falls off.

while home for thanksgiving my parents asked me to clean out the items that were mine from the closet of my childhood bedroom.  i found lots of mix tapes, photo albums, and boxes of stuff (a box from with all kinds of items from a camp i went to as an 11 year old and a box of all my notebooks and papers from college).

just the week before i checked out the book stuff from the library, as i am so curious about the things that people keep and how and why.  it was great to go through the boxes...and also great to part with a bunch of the stuff.

i found two truly great things in the boxes...that stayed in the keeper box.  first, was a paper i wrote about my lebanese ancestors for a citizenship and migration class in college.  i forgot i had done that and rereading the paper and pieces of the interview i did with my grandfather was so special.  second, was my journal from the first trip i ever took wasn't anything earth shattering, but it was interesting to see what i wrote about.

have you found anything interesting from the past lately?

what did you love as a kid...

i was always fascinated by...

the tube at the bank that you put the capsule in and whooosh up it went into the bank, the trampoline hanging from the ceiling at sam's club, the map of the world on the floor on the show carmen san diego, playing in cars that weren't on, putting glue on my it could dry and then i'd pick it off, calling airlines and asking about itineraries to exotic places, playing tag team wrestling with my brother even though there were just two of us, hanging out in nooks/forts/corners of the world, and playing in the woods.

what about you?  what did you love when you were young?

raking leaves with hobbes...

i took yesterday off from work and tried to relax...and did a few chores around the house and out and about with hobbes.  we went to the dump, dropped off recycling, went to the drive-thru teller at the bank for a dog bone, and then raked some of the yard.  raking with hobbes is a challenge.  he dives into the pile of leaves and burrows in.  oh and when pulling the tarp loaded with leaves across the yard he tries to jumping on the tarp, biting the tarp, and eating leaves. it takes longer, but it's worth it.

oh to be home and outside with the dog.

and home is looking really great...o and his parents did all kind of things to make the house better...raking, installing gutters, painting, and more! is so nice to be home!

laissez les bons temps rouler...

i'm off to new orleans tomorrow for our annual work conference.  i'll be there all next week and then some, so i'll be back on the blog during thanksgiving week.  the thought of turkey, mashed potatoes, and my new favorite love pumpkin pie will keep me going through all the crawfish and conference craziness!

until then, be well!

i'd love to paint a bunch of colors on the wall and then get to name them myself.  i bet most of my titles would be old memories or odd things...vcr screen blue, skin in the middle of february, cider hill rubber swing black, and barbie convertible grey.

if you could name a benjamin moore color what would it be called?

simple white...

simple white ramekins.  two...maybe four.  they are on the list.  walking myself to le roux during lunch today to scoop them up.  a future of baked eggs and mini chicken pot pies awaits!  what's that?  oh right, it's the sound of the button popping off of my jeans!  here's to winter weight!

the coast of maine..

i love this photo because it reminds me of home in a dozen ways...mostly because it seems like this could be on little john island, the colors remind me of our living room rug, and because it seems like hobbes could come tearing across the screen with muddy paws at any moment.  i also love this photo because if you look at the top of the photo and let your eyes blur a bit, you forget that there is even a rug there.

one talented lady that angela adams!

an igloo made out of books...genius!  what a home! this should be a staple in every school and children's section of the library.  and i'd take one, too!

when i was a kid, my dad would build us an igloo each winter.  since then i've been obsessed.  i even remember being a kid and walking through sam's club with my mom and seeing the dogloo and thinking i somehow needed that...not for our dog, but for my life.

new winter goal: build igloo in the backyard!  o want to join?  if so, eskimo kissed for you!

an extra hour...

we fall back this weekend and i'm trying to stay positive on all this getting darker waaaay earlier business.  i'm keeping a few things in mind.  first, every second is a second closer to the shortest day of the year.  two,   lighter mornings (but lately a morning is still a morning!).  lastly, we get an extra hour.  i'm going to spend mine doing the following...some thing artsy and creative.  stay tuned!  what about you?  how are you going to spend you extra sixty minutes?

this morning...

there are various foods that i could eat seemingly endlessly...bacon, honey sesame sticks, and good bagels.  today i'm craving a bagel...oh lets be honest bagels plural!  maybe with veggie cream cheese and cucumbers...or with cream cheese and raspberry jelly.

i blame my parents for our endless trips to the bagel cafe in bangor as a child.  thanks mom and dad! bless you!

lately i've been grateful for...warm fireplaces (especially on nights without power), inspiring bookstores, cuddly dogs, hubbies that clean the house, conversations with friends, thinking about old books from childhood, warm socks, puffy coats, blaze orange, my commute time, the power of a checklist, quick email exchanges with o during the day, falafel, humor amidst chaos, and fresh baguettes with butter.

what about you?  what are you grateful for lately?

pick one...

this reminds me of life many moons ago working in a paper store, my dear friend tobi, and living in brookline.  so...pick a color and then click here to find out what it means.  then maybe read all the descriptions and find out what color you maybe should have picked.

all this going back in time in my mind makes me want to go to anna's tacqueria for lunch and then to khao sarn for yellow curry (and pad thai) for dinner...with jani and tobi.

so tell me...what was your color?

airedale reunion...

this weekend we found ourselves on pemaquid...cozy, filled with good (spicy) food, and a little snowy.  before the snow arrived we managed to squeeze in an airedale playdate.  joy lives on pemaquid.  she's little, tough, and a tad fancier in the grooming department than hobbes.

these two were like twins...they chased, played tug-o-war, and even drank at the same time.

can't we get two o, please?

this morning...

this morning i'm in nyc.  a quick morning stroll, breakfast with a former co-worker, and then whoosh...soon enough i'll be home in the country.  it's so strange...i was in nyc a year ago this exact weekend.  what are you up to this weekend?

the pooch...

today feels like a hobbes photo kind of day don't you think?  that face.  those eyes.  i tell you we love this four legged mud bucket.  good old mr. woobie.  hobbesiepants.  bop bop.

ok, one more dog photo to share.  at the dinner the night before our wedding, we made a red heart out of tape on the screen door so that no one would walk into it/through it.  i looked over at one point and saw this...

photo credit: christina wnek...thanks to miss christina for the cd of images from the wedding and the lead-up festivities.  i heart your picts.

my dear...

my dear friend caitlin sent me one of the nicest emails i have ever received over the weekend.  she's one of those friends that is just love.  love and a big big heart.  her friendship has always been nourishing and inspiring...and she motivates me simply by being herself.  she's a creative artistic spirit, a loving mother, an adventurer in the kitchen, a beautiful person, and a strong woman.  how did i get so lucky to have her in my life?

caitlin, may your heart and mind hold all the knowledge you need in the coming weeks as you take this next big step.   when i see you next you will be a midwife...a midwife!

awe doesn't even come close to how i feel!

lawn games...

during our wedding we had lots of lawn games: ladder golf, jenga, and cornhole.  i'm quite certain that o's friends played cornhole almost non-stop that weekend...
andrew, christina, o, and i have decided that we are going to attempt (as a group) to make a few sets of cornhole.  wish us luck!
i heart all games...lawn games, board games, word games, all of them.  i'd say i'm not competitive, but that isn't quite true.  however, i can say that in recent years i've become less competitive.  what i loved about the games at our wedding was that they weren't really winning games...they were social games.  i loved looking over during the weekend as friends placed jenga blocks atop a wobbly tower, sunk a bean bag, or settled in to watch a game.

ahhh good (non-competitive) times!
