sneak peek of the garden (two post day!)

i've been promising this photo for too long. it's our backyard taken just two days ago. the garden is going crazy and it's just a little nook of goodness back there!

and check it out just a few months ago...
we ate the first tomatoes from our garden last night. they were fantastic!

happy summer gang!

the oregon coast...

video

o, em, and i drove from seattle to portland via the oregon coast and it was a long day, but tons of fun. we put o in the back seat and hit the road. first stop...astoria, oregon. actually the first stop was on this super long bridge with a little construction...

i'd like to thank the garmin for helping us so many times during our time out west. anyways, it was on this bridge that i got an email from a co-worker letting me know that there was a pair of pink underwear on the floor of my cube at work. and they weren't mine. the verdict is still out on what went down, but it was a good distraction and soon enough we were in astoria...where they filmed kindergarten cop and the goonies!

we made a quick stop at the goonies house...
and then we went to cannon beach and saw haystack rock...

o and i both agreed that this was the best beach we've ever seen. so fun. as you can see from the video we had a pretty good time!

pike place market...

we hit up pike place market and gathered ingredients for dinner. it was crowded, but so fun. highlights included finding this baby avocado...
this sign on the bigger avocados, which reads: pleeza no squeeza...
the piles of fruit and all the samples...
these organic raspberries (we bought an entire flat), which we spread directly over toast the next day and made into a raspberry peach cobbler...
but not before emily put them on each finger and dove in...
ooh and these honey sticks which we put on cheese from beechers...
it. was. delectable. all of it!

tomorrow i can't wait to take you along on our trip over a very long bridge, to the goonies house, and to the beach where we dipped our toes into the pacific.

seattle...

oh seattle...you are one hilly lady, but we liked you (alot)! it all started off right with a trip to 5 spot for an incredible brunch...

with the best hash browns i've ever had, great tunes (they were playing pump up the jam!), and the fact that they opened the door exactly when we arrived there...it was the fact that they had a fresh bottle of ketchup on each table that we both just loved. for real...we opened it and heard the seal pop and didn't have to imagine some awful vat of ketchup that was used to fill gross bottles. we're weird...we know, but it's the small things.

from breakfast we walked to the fremont sunday market. i could have poked around for hours...in fact i think we did! i loved all the vendors, but i really loved all the little collections of like grouped with like...
i met this guy selling maple syrup from his family farm in stannard, vermont...
when i told him i'd just been at a yoga retreat in stannard...he was so excited he gave me a free bottle of syrup!!!!

i have one super exciting thing to share about the market, but i can't just yet...the surprise is still in the works. however, think you will find it worth the wait. ooh...and tomorrow i am excited to share our adventures outside of the city...the day we threw snowballs and played in the sand!

seattle public library...

we visited the seattle public library last week, we marveled at the beautiful floors, i had a panic attack on the top floor because it made me dizzy, and we hid something in a book for someone to find. if you know anyone in seattle...please pass this post their way!

there are just a few simple steps...

find the library...

find this chapter...

in this book...

then get yourself a cookie, a coffee, or hide the $ and a note in another book...
i hope whomever finds it will then drop me an email and tell me who they are...where they've been...and where they are headed.

many thanks to mr. and mrs. loerke for the inspiration!

p.s. we wanted to put the note in the book extremely loud and incredibly close, but every copy was checked out (which made me smile)!

portland to portland...

hello! after an incredible vacation in the pacific northwest i can't wait to share pictures and stories with you. the photo above was taken of a wall in a sweet restaurant in astoria, oregon...i just loved all the color and simple collections that made for a stunning wall. anyways...we were delayed on our way home last night and it was a late night. oh, but there is no other feeling like climbing into your own bed after being away from home. i am excited to post on tuesday...so much to share!

just me...loving color

crayons_big2
this shows the progression of colors in a crayola crayon box between 1903 and 2010. do you remember the sesame street clip where they went to the crayola factory? here it is below. i have about six favorite parts from when i was a kid!

i would love to play with these 500 colored pencils. i'd make a rainbow, arrange them in various patterns, and probably get really obsessive...
i also just love colored ribbon. i could browse a ribbon racks for a long time. sigh...
ooh for one more beautiful color project, click here.

happy friday kiddos. we're headed to jill and jersey's wedding at mcmenamin's just outside [the other] portland. but first, a par three golf tourney! can't wait to share photos from our seattle and portland adventure with you!

a summer treat...

Key Lime Pie by The Guest Baker!
when we get back to maine, i'm making this key lime pie recipe. i think i'll make it when the bliss family comes to visit as a sweet and cold reward for finishing the beach to beacon 10k. i'm so excited to buy key limes. i have to refrain nearly every time i see the bag of them in the grocery store. maybe i should make one pie to test out first. any available testers out there?

russian roots...

aside from jilly-b, bubber, and jeeel...my dad calls me his sweet babu. as in babushka...an elderly russian woman or a triangular head scarf/hankerchief. there could be worse things to call someone. maybe it's because i loved playing with my grandmothers matryoshka dolls as a kid or because as a scowley infant all wrapped in a blanket i looked like a babushka.

i saw the nesting cups above called babushkups and guess who i thought of? love you dad!

maine squeeze....

Smoothie

i blame my co-worker anne. she introduced me to maine squeeze juice cafe and now i am addicted. last week i think i had four in five days. this cute shop is close to work, offers tons of options, the girls who work there are sweet, and i think it's affordable. i didn't consider myself much of a smoothie person, but now i think i have to...especially since the girls said, "the regular" when she saw me on thursday.

i started feeling bad that i was wanting them so often and then i had a realization...they're healthy and it's flippin' summer. whitney and i have smoothie dates and you should see how happy we are. you should only be concerned if i cross over to a fully liquid diet. i recommend you get to 5 1/2 moulton street in portland as fast as your little legs can carry you.

july=love!

blog friends...it's been so hot and humid in our neck of the woods over the past few weeks. the dehumidifier is working overtime, o has been screaming "i'm hottttt jiiiillll" so often, and we've been drinking lots of newman's own lemon-aided iced tea. oh but july...you are just love. humidity aside, the days are still long, the garden is booming, and it's skirt season.

today we find ourselves in the pacific northwest with some more bearable temps and some wonderful friends. my days of winter crockpot stews, evening fires, outerwear, and cozy slippers couldn't feel farther away.

find a pool or an ice cream cone and let it be summer.

west coast...

we're heading out for a week long adventure to seattle, portland, and some cool places in between the two. i've never visited the pacific northwest...so i am thrilled! we're meeting em and stew out there, touring around, celebrating jill and jersey's wedding, and soaking up some cool things to bring back to the east coast portland.

if you have any must see places, please send them my way! i'll be posting next week and taking lots of photos to share when i return! have a great weekend.

ooooh...

i just love these flats. not too pointy. not too round. i would especially like to wear them with a pair of jeans and this shirt (minus the yellow flower)...
in amsterdam we saw this whole rack of striped shirts in this vintage store. why didn't i just scoop one up there?
i'm not much of a shopper, so i hope that i'll see just what i'm looking for in a shop window...a passive hunt.

photo credits: shoes (help, i can't figure out where i found these or who to credit!) and jumping girl.

getting brushed...

Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair *explored*
i was in new harbor at the cottage, i got a visit every so often from kili, o's brother's dog. we spent a while on friday afternoon together while i brushed her in the sun. at first she thought the bandage on my finger was a treat and kept looking at it, but soon she relaxed and just enjoyed the grooming.

it made me remember how much i loved having my hair brushed as a kid. we've all seen what having a neighbor in cosmetology school did for my hairdos back then, but even with the bad cuts it still felt so good. i remember when we had to get checked for lice in school how much i liked the feeling as the school nurse picked through my hair (i think they used two thin little straws?).

our closest family friend used to braid her girls' hair all the time and on one visit i jumped in line, too. i remember tears streaming down my face as she pulled my hair tight into a braid. she wasn't being mean, i think i just had a sensitive scalp. oh but to have my hair pulled back and to look like my friends, it was worth it.

i bet we never grow out of loving hair our hair brushed or played with. if we loved it when we were 8, chances are we'll love it when we're 80. which makes me want to call my local council on aging/senior center and offer to come in one afternoon and brush anyone's hair who wants it. pretty soon it could be a program that they offer, but it would need a good name. any ideas?

a sign...

for a while o's dad has been asking for a sign for their house. a marker for their little slice of the world at the end of a windy dirt road. a few weeks ago i got a piece of driftwood and got to it...
in process...
outside as the paint dried...
and in the wild...
we know our way there, but it is a sweet sign showing us we've arrived!

new harbor recap...

oh pemaquid peninsula...you are just a love! here are a few photos of my little getaway.

the adorable cottage...
the deck and rocking chair where i spent the better part of my days reading and just being...
the view over to my neighbor's (o's parents') dock...
i took this photo as just another way to remember my vacation (and my big finger bandage)...
each night after dinner, i'd sit on the deck and either read or write...
on friday night o drove up from portland and joined me in the little a-frame, which was a sweet way to end my time there. i'm going to try to carry the calm of my vacation with me through today and into the week. wishing you a monday, that like pemaquid, is just a love.

driftwood...

em suggested we make some of these this summer after she was poking around online at white flower farmhouse and i wholeheartedly agree. that website is so beautiful with all kinds of simple pretty things. when i look at their online shop i get lost in the feelings the images evoke. over the past few days on the deck, on the dock, and inside my little cottage i've been dreaming about the simplicity of this place. the found objects from nature, the mismatched furniture, a rocking chair, yellowed nautical charts, big mugs for tea, and candles. i have my dream retreat and my dream barn...now i'm developing a dream cottage, too! it's a good thing dreams are free! my dream cottage will have one of these driftwood boats and lots of rocks along the window sills. i think i'm going to do a little brainstorm this morning about what else would be at the cottage.

it's been a sweet retreat and i am so grateful that i was able to be here in back cove...and how incredible that a full weekend awaits.

loving

arnold palmer invitational

my little cottage by the sea, sweet messages and calls from friends, local anesthesia and pain meds (ouch!), not having to change my finger dressing for a few days (phew), that i cried in the kitchen of my little cottage when i saw that o's mom had left me a jar of half lemonade and half iced tea (along with all kinds of other goodies), overhearing the lobstermen across the way, npr's this i believe, reading all afternoon and evening, some new freckles, being cool by the ocean's edge, needing my fleece, caprese salad for dinner, eating outside, the smell of the ocean as the sun sets, when the fog starts to roll in making it look like a black and white photograph, bringing candles outside and reading for hours as the water lapped the shore, feeling so far away (yet having people i love right next door), time to simply be, hearing the lobster boats early in the morning, and a new day.

come on...get happy!

new favorite book. it makes me so happy when i read it. i don't want it to end. i'm off to have my nail bed reset or something gross like that this morning, but the exciting news is that by the afternoon i will be in a little cottage on the ocean by myself for a few days. i can't wait to curl up with this book. i'll have some bread and cheese and a big glass with half lemonade and half iced tea close by. i'm excited to write, read, nibble, sleep, dip my toes in the water, and just be. my own little happiness project.
