wall of buttons...

i met kari and little birdie yesterday during my lunch break for a quick trip to the central yarn shop on congress street. i think all three of us could have spent a long time staring in amazement at the wall of buttons. after poking around, we found the perfect few to take home.

i realize just how much i love when similar things are grouped together. even the god awful ugly buttons in the shop seemed to fit in and have a place.

the trip to the shop reminded me of my babysitter when i was young. she was an older and very crafty woman who had jars of buttons at her house. i can still remember the feeling of digging both hands into the jar and of always destroying my brother when we would play hide (and then go seek) the button. i'mjustkidding.

a creative sunday project...

on sunday i decided, that while o was out of town, i was going to paint our bedroom. i called katie to ask a question about a paint color they recent used and the next thing i knew i had two volunteers offering to help. a quick clean of the room and moving the furniture, a quick trip to maine hardware and we were ready to start. here is a before shot taken with my iphone...
we used the benjamin moore color atmospheric. since the watson's have painted so much they don't tape off...instead they do what is called cutting in. here's katie...
and here's trevor...
i was in charge of paint rolling. i rolled my heart out...i have a blister to prove it! when we were feeling a little crazy trevor suggested painting the inside panels of the doors. we did a little test...
but we vetoed the idea and covered the door in white...
we painted two coats, painted the trim and the baseboards in a beautiful clean white, and took off the closet door (which always bangs in to the bed)...
before o got home i moved around some artwork, put up curtains, tidied our dresser and end tables. the photos don't quite capture the color, but take a peek...
and from another view...
o was completely surprised when he got home and i can't help but smile when i go our room. katie and trevor, i thank you so much for your help. you guys are rockstars who made this possible. thanks for taking the time to help me when you've got lots of your own projects going on at home. i am so grateful.

ferry beach...

i met friends on friday after work at ferry beach in scarborough for a picnic. we cruised along the beach, nibbled on chips and salsa, dug our feet in the sand, played games, laughed alot, and tooksome photos as the sun began to set. oh...and i even dipped my toes in the water.

the beach was a wonderful way to start the weekend. do you want to know a secret? i don't really like sitting on a hot beach in the middle of the day in the summer. i feel like i can hear my skin burning. oh but to be at the beach in the late afternoon or early evening...i'll take it!

i took this photo of trevor and katie just before we left. i just love it because it was part of a whole series and it was the moment before they both turned to look at me and the moment right after someone quoted a silly movie or show. stay tuned tomorrow for a post about what these two hardworking friends helped me do (all day) on sunday. i am so excited for a show and tell!

have a great monday. take yourself out for a walk (maybe in rain boots or with an umbrella if you live in maine). get yourself a little treat. as o always says to me: carpe carpe!

p.s. i'm going to the dentist today...i'm so excited!

seen at the community gardens...

hello dears. it's friday...already! i took a walk with my camera to the east end community gardens earlier this week. i love seeing the various personalities of the plots and those who tend them as the gardens grow. above are garlic scapes, which i bought at the market on wednesday, and i just love the curls. they are delicious. 'tis the season...so get 'em quick before it's too late!

i liked this big driftwood wishbone that some creative gardener constructed...
and i wanted to dive headfirst into this lettuce, but i behaved. doesn't it just look so beautiful?
this year i've really come to appreciate gardening stakes and how versatile, helpful, simple they are. i love this teepee of stakes for peas to climb...
close by i saw this little guy looking for something to wrap around and climb up...
and then there were these two. just making a little love....
next week i'll post some pictures of my garden. some tiny green tomatoes just appeared, lots of flowers are in bloom, and my containers are doing great. can't wait to share an early spring photo and then a current shot. enjoy your weekend!

a full and sparkly heart...

Sparkler heart
last night i was part of a top secret covert operation. itwassooooofun! my dear friend christina's husband, andrew, has been away for work for five weeks. christina is six months pregnant and has been holding down the fort while he's been gone. on tuesday night we got a call from andrew, scheduled to arrive home on saturday, that he was flying in on wednesday to surprise christina. i was supposed to pick him up at the airport last night at 8:30, so around 8 i called christina to check in. she was cooking eggs and trying to get motivated to clean her house. perfect...she was home!

i scooped him up from the airport and instead of some elaborate plan, we just pulled in the driveway. the dog started barking, she came to the door, and then realized what was going on. amidst a long hug, lots of tears, and her repeating what are you doing here over and over...it was a moment that literally made me giddy.

i felt like a kid full of energy. i wished i had a sparkler, so i could run all around them and around the yard like crazy writing out words like oh my gosh and he's home, drawing hearts, and making lots of exclamation points. since i didn't have a sparkler, i did what any normal friend would do, i stood far enough away that it wasn't awkward, hopped up and down with excitement, and got all teary.

i was so honored to witness the surprise. as i drove off, leaving them on their front lawn, with the windows down on the perfect summer night my heart was so full...and sparkly! welcome home andrew!

color me mine...

for my birthday katie gave me a day trip to the paint your own pottery place to make the official salad bowl for when we play the game. amanda, katie and i went and spent a few hours on our projects. since the game requires a bowl for the current cards and a place to discard cards, too, we only had one option with something that fit our needs. check it out...
so we will likely have to start calling it dog bowl rather than salad bowl. katie and i each made one...
i carved the names of some of the people who often end up in the mix into the glaze and decorated the heck out of mine...amanda made an amazing mosaic style plate so her two kitties can dine in style...
we get to pick up our items on friday and see how everything came out! thanks for the great present katie and the wonderful company ladies. speaking of ladies...we played boys against girls this weekend and the boys got destroyed. who's ready to play again?

hello summer...

i hope you enjoyed the first day of summer yesterday (and aren't thinking about how the hours of sunlight start getting shorter from here on out). i had a wonderful wonderful summer solstice. after a lovely day at work (where my taste testers tell me i need to try again on the popsicles...next time with more sugar) i met maura on the eastern prom to do 108 sun salutations. it was wonderful to be outside doing yoga where i got to hear the ice cream truck go by, see all the people out and about, look at horizon...an island spotted bay, take breaks to drink refreshing minty lemon water, and fall into a rhythm where i didn't even have to think about anything but moving with my breath and just being. yoga was followed by a sweet dinner with o in our backyard and a little walk to the park that overlooks portland for the sunset. yesterday was a beautiful start to what i hope will be a wonderful summer!

avocado pops...

a summer dream realized...i made avocado popsicles! i owe it to uncle jedd, who left his cuisinart at my house the night before, so the blending was easy easy (thanks buddy)! just a few simple ingredients: avocados, coconut milk, soy milk, a tad of sugar and a pinch of salt...oooh and a freezer! i made a bunch of in my little popsicle molds...
and i made some little mini pops with toothpicks in an ice cube tray with the leftover mix...
i used my turkish ice cream spoons to taste test the mixture throughout the process (all six spoons actually...no double dipping!) and it was yummy. i'm having my official taste testers try them out today...i'll let you know the verdict. i'm glad to have the molds out just in time for the official start of summer. i'm excited to experiment with a bunch of different flavors. next up cucumber, yogurt and mint. i'm imagining these for dessert after a spicy indian meal. mmm.

red loves...

here are a few photos of red things i've been loving this week. this little container of cherry tomatoes makes me think of my lunch with kari and little c. i left our chat excited for the freshness of the farmers market, meals with friends, and summer (it's almost here)!

these radishes, and all the other piles of fresh produce at the market, make me so excited for the wednesday and saturday markets. they also inspire me at my attempt to try cooking new things at dinner and our efforts to really honor the act of sitting down for a meal.

this tote is currently en route to vermont for the lovely folks at sky meadow. i was bombing around in my craft room on wednesday night and it came to me. i love the browns and reds. i'm loving my new fabric paint and excited to make more projects. next weekend is going to be a crafting extravaganza.

this weekend brings lots of exciting things...dinner tonight with everyone from my family and o's family, a trip to the portland observatory, a few home chores, lots of outside time, searching for puppies, a trip to the deering oaks market for ingredients for saturday night's dinner, and some yoga. what about you? do tell...

a family tradition...

diego goldberg and his family have a ritual of taking a photo of themselves every june 17th. i love this so much it hurts. this visual measuring wall of diego's beautiful family is a powerful way of showing the changes in a year, five years, twenty years. love.

roaring 20s...

here are a few (not so great) photos from the gatsby party at the portland club. we had so so so much fun! i haven't danced that much since em's bachelorette party.

here's em dogg dancing on the front steps...

here's the group (the lady in royal blue came and taught us the charleston)...

i like this picture of the dunthien's partly because of how josh is looking at kate and partly because it's the same face he makes when anyone talks about russell crowe...

i also love this photo of amanda. it's blurry, but i just love it. so pretty...

katie thanks for turning 30, tobi thanks for the dress, ladies thanks for dancing, and trevor thanks for pulling it all together!

sky meadow...

things i loved about sky meadow retreat and our weekend of yoga...
the incredible green mountain views, passing barns and farms on the drive, the winding trails and paths, the tree that formed a u, the big barn and windows, that it felt like miss rumphius had been there, the entire sherts family and their home, big gardens starting to sprout, colorful yoga mats, our room and spacious bunks, spaces to wander and sit, silent breakfasts, healthy and wildly delicious meals, lauren's laughter, the excitement with which the staff presented each meal, seeing three daughters who look so much like each other and so much like their mother...and yet so unique, shoes off at the door, the unique outbuildings, being there with my mom and o's mom, roaming animals, buddhas and fairies and gnomes placed around the property, how well our group got along, the woodstove, the mish mash of mugs for tea, zero cell service, conservation efforts, the yurt where we had a fire, jon's mr. apron, the moldy compost club, maura's gentle presence, getting to sit and talk with the ladies of sky meadow, giving the youngest daughter my camera and seeing the photos she took of sky meadow, meeting two people who live just two streets away from me in portland, laughing yoga, the sunlit space in which we got to practice yoga, the second most starry night i've ever seen, and thoughtful and deliberate details of the barn and property that worked so beautifully.

the outside of the retreat center...

and a colorful shot from inside...
this was a retreat in every sense of the word. i am thinking about my next time here already...and i've just left. if you can...go!

365.

my blog is one year old today. happy birthday little one! thanks to those readers who've been around since the beginning and to those who've appeared along the way. this smallest of online spaces has encouraged me to do more...more photography, more sharing, more writing, and more thinking. my blog has also helped me to connect and stay connected with people. the ultimate connection came this weekend. i was away at a yoga retreat at the incredible sky meadow retreat center and fully offline for days. yesterday, on the ride home, we stopped somewhere in new hampshire to get gas. i decided to check my phone and email. in my inbox was a message from a long lost friend from new zealand that i haven't seen since pre-email 1991 (hello 19 years ago) that somehow found my blog!! i've tried to find her for years and just like that she appeared!

that was a big connection, however please know that the comments people leave and times in conversation when someone reference something they read in a post mean so much to me, too! i have many more things to write about, so i hope you'll continue to follow along. onward...

retreat...

i leave this afternoon for a three day yoga retreat in the northeast kingdom of vermont with my mom and o's mom. i'm really excited for the chance to be somewhere new, to get to live in a refinished barn, to do yoga, to have free time to read and write and take walks, and to be with such special people. i'll be back on monday...hopefully with some good pictures to share. have a wonderful weekend! xo.

hours and hours...

Springs
growing up we had a trampoline. i spent so many hours on it...jumping, flipping, sleeping, talking with friends, and making up routines. ian and i made it out injury free...even though there were some crazy bounces off and some close calls. i loved that trampoline...having to wear gloves when we put the springs on, the sounds it made on the first few jumps after putting it together, the blue pad around the edges, laying face down and looking through at the grass below, scratching my fingernails against the black mat, playing break the egg, flips, getting shot up, and so so so much more.

i'm working on a story where there is a brief mention of a trampoline and when i started thinking about it so many memories came rushing back. i still remember the first time i walked into sam's club with my mom when i was eleven and saw the big trampoline hanging from the ceiling. holy crap...that was all i thought. and when it appeared on the lawn on my next birthday...i thought the same thing. and now...i think it too. holy crap that was so much fun.

being silly...

Vintage Portrait of two Babies in an Old Fashioned Antique Baby Carriage Buggy
a few weeks ago i announced to emily that we had the perfect name if a little girl puppy came our way: nellie. she told me that was the top girl baby name on her and jay's list. and since the stewart's are only going to have girls (hee-hee), i decided i'd give her that one. she refused. i refused. so we compromised. we decided that from now on all girl babies will be called nellies. as in...did you hear christina is having a nellie?

since boy babies are out there we decided we need a name for that too...meet nigel (which was what my parents were going to call me if i was a boy. i love you mom and dad, but really?) so you might hear someone say...boubacar, ezra and carter are the cutest nigels, don't you agree? or did you hear jess duncan is having a nigel?

my favorite moment with this new phrase was when em asked if i'd seen the movie babies...then she said, "it has nellies and nigels from all over the world!"

i hope you'll start using nellie and nigel, too...it's silly but give it a try!

commuting win!

a few weeks ago i was biking to work along commercial street in my business clothes when two guys on bikes ride up next to me (sounds scary right?)...

them: excuse me are you biking to work?
me: yup.
them: great because this is commute another way week.
me: i bike to work most days.
them: well...we just want to thank you for commuting a different way.

one guys hands me a little card and they peddle off. when i got to work a minute later i looked at the card and it was a gift card for a $50 bike tune up from allspeed. commuting win!

this weekend i popped in to schedule the tune up. i explained to the guy at the counter that i had a gift card for a tune up that i had won...turns out it was him who gave it to me!

me: i was the one on commerical street.
him: you were the one wearing heels!
me (to myself): yes, because with the pants i was wearing i need high shoes, but by the end of the day my black heels smell so bad that i have to get my tootsies in there in the morning and not take them off until i am in the privacy of my own home at night. my coworkers would revolt if they had to smell me changing my shoes.

so my little cruiser goes in on wednesday for some loving! i'm thinking that with that extra $50 i should by some new black heels...don't you think?

ps happy birthday lvg!

loving...

this photo of the green's with ezra mid-sneeze, waking up before my alarm for about the past week straight, running along the water before work, rereading stuff i've written so long ago that i don't even know what will happen next, mid-day emails from em, watching my garden change day by day, sharing a blog link with someone you know will appreciate it, meeting o for a quick lunch during the day, that someone i adore just got a job where i work, the arrival of a creative burst, that i've wanted to bust out the charleston about ten times this week, finishing a gross project at work that i'd put off for too long, a three day work week, hearing great news from my brother (go e!), the peanut butter and jelly sandwich restaurant in the public market house, $5 movie tuesdays at the nickelodeon, plans for an exciting birthday lunch walk with a friend, sleeping up on the third floor last night since i had the whole house to myself, and getting to be with christina a bunch this weekend.

i hope you have a great weekend. any fun plans?
