new slippers...

christina gave me these beautiful slippers for christmas*. it's like she read my mind...they are perfect! i've been looking and looking...and now i can stop. the color, the size, the texture of the boiled wool, even the button...they make me giddy and keep me warm!

happy toes! thanks sweet christina.

*a local woman hand made these. if you are interested in warm tootsies, send me an email and i will pass along her contact information.

typing...

this week while off from work i've been busy typing away...working on some writing, transcribing an old journal (more on that soon), adding to my list of resolutions (and more on that soon, too), and catching up on some old emails.

i want to make more time each week for writing...and yet there is something so wonderfully surprising about reading something i've written months (or years) ago. i often forget what i've written. i love when it feels like i'm reading someone else's writing whom i really relate to or when i impress myself with what is on the page.

hobbes seems to love the sound of my hunting and pecking. it's the perfect dog lullaby for one of his many naps throughout the day.

snowed in...

wheeee ....

we spent all day yesterday snowed in at home. we went outside to shovel, play/dig in the snow with hobbes, and get the mail. other than that we ate homemade turkey noodle soup, had a fire going all day, found the greatest station to listen to on pandora, both spent hours in our offices cleaning/sorting/organizing, made space for some of our new gifts, and together ate almost half a crate of clementines.

ah yes...yesterday was a good day!

amsterdam (and yarmouth) just got even better...

Amsterdam winter

i got a pair of ice skates for christmas. thanks o! i love love love ice skating...which is probably because i spent hours and hours at the frozen pond across the street from my house as a kid. i am so excited to go to the rink in yarmouth with my new skates. no big fancy moves...just gliding along. i have big hopes of finding a huge snow-free lake or winding river this winter and skating for miles. this brings me to my next thought...it simply never occurred to me that the canals in amsterdam would freeze. i could spend hours zipping along under bridges and past houseboats.

oh skating...i forgot how much i loved you.

santi claus...

if christmas is your thing, i wish you a wonderful holiday weekend filled with all that is good. today i'm thinking about the time ian's present fell off of santa's sleigh, the year santa wrote us a letter that we had to hold up to the mirror in order to read that closed by saying "grabbed a beer, see ya next year"...oh and our enormous stockings that are too tall to hang from any mantle.

what are your favorite childhood christmas memories?

wintery yoga...

i haven't done yoga in simply way too long. oh and i've missed it! a few days ago i rolled out the mat and put an end to this silliness. the socks seen above keep me happy in the cooler months. so...when i did yoga the other day i wore them. i did alot of seated poses and stretches. i also just sat for a while.
stylish...nope. cozy...absolutely!

i love...

the noises he makes in the middle of the night, the fuzz between his ears, the bandage he has on his paw right now, watching him explore in the woods, how much he loves being by the action, his love of peanut butter, when he puts the breaks on while running when i whistle, seeing him slide across the ice, how much he loves the braided fleece rope that ian gave him and the kitty that maryellen gave him, when he climbs into our bed around 6:30 in the morning, when he gets lazy in the middle of licking something and just leaves his tongue hanging outside his mouth mid-lick, the way he walks when he has his water-proof bootie for his bandage on, and how small he becomes when he curls up to sleep. oh the list goes on...

moving day...

again! we spent saturday moving the last of our items from our house in portland. this move was alot of the big/heavy items. couches, beds, rugs, dressers, tables...and my rock collection (super heavy). the only light things were the big trash bags filled will pillows and comforters. above is the before shot and below is the after shot...

ahhh...much better! this room, which is currently housing all of the furniture that we are uncertain what to do with at this point is going to be a sweet dance floor...once we get curtains. it feels good to settle in and great to know that we won't be moving again for a long time. right o?

early mornings...

my morning routine includes bundling up, watching hobbes do his stretches, cool air, talking to myself/hobbes, and walking through the trails near our house. i love when we time it right and the sun is rising just as we leave the house.
i also love the way hobbes gently wakes us up in the morning. sometimes getting out of our warm bed isn't easy, but to start the day with this guy...it's oh so worth it!

winter wishes...

every so often i make an inspiration board and this past weekend i got started on one for the coming season. i'm pretty excited for what ended up on there...yoga, wellness, good food, oh and lots of color. here's hoping!

and one big winter wish that just came true...we found wonderful tenants for our place in portland. wooo-hoooo!

happy weekend.

the cone...

it's almost off. just one more day. hobbes has been doing well and although bumping into things frequently with his cone...he's healing and very very ready for a good run!
however...today the cone is serving a second purpose. it's a megaphone to say happy birthday to my mom.

draft protection...

after our energy audit we are trying to tighten things up at the old homestead. i decided that one simple fix would be making draft stoppers for the doors and sills in our living room. it just so happens that my favorite corduroy matches perfectly. hobbes and i got to it...measuring, cutting, sewing, stuffing, and stitching them up.
this picture does absolutely nothing to capture how great they look. so...you'll have to take my word for it or come over and take a peek for yourself!

quince & co.

this past weekend i finally made it to knitwit and scooped up a few skeins of portland-based quince & co. yarn. i am determined to make a sweater this winter...and have fun while doing it!
the yarn is made with lots of love...and you can tell! i must have handled and admired every color that was in stock.
after debating on the color, i finally settled on carrie's yellow. i'll keep you posted as things progress, but for now just looking at the yarn is enough.

early bird...

on saturday morning, hobbes woke up really early. i took the opportunity to admire the tiniest of snowfalls and then get crafting. i'd been wanting to make the birds i'd seen while in philly. i grabbed my fabric and got to it! look what arrived...
hobbes, our resident birder, was curious. so for now, they are perched on our bookshelf and mantle. one decided to buck the trend and flew north...all the way to new harbor!

happy birthday dyan!

today...

Circles

i wish i could stumble upon this while out for a walk and just happen to have earplugs and two drum sticks. i'd make some music...and just alot of noise. and when i was through...i'd just walk away and carry on!

happy weekend to you and your. little hobbes gets picked up from the vet in a few minutes, so we'll be laying low this weekend. what are you up to?

oh my...

this sweater meets shawl meets poncho stopped me in my tracks. i love the snaps, the color, and oh simply everything about it. if i owned it i would wear it often and love it well. i think it's one of those sad yet secret blessings that it's out of stock...because it isn't cheap. i'll add it to my years from now when i'm a great knitter list. until then, i'll wear it each night in my dreams!

holiday time...

on saturday we got our tree...and it's perfect. hobbes initially thought the stand was another water bowl. aye aye aye!

all along the walk we do each morning and scattered behind our house are branches covered with red berries. we bushwacked and got a bunch to bring into our house and put them on the mantle in a vase...
we also made paper rings out of some scraps of paper i had from an invitation project...

it actually is beginning to look alot like christmas. on sunday, while ironing my work clothes, i watched the movie the holiday...which always gets me in the holiday spirit. i may regret saying this, but i think i might even be ready for a big snow.

dog post...

i haven't posted many hobbes pictures recently, so now that i have my camera cord here are a few. the top one was when he was 9 weeks old...

and here is is now...
lounging...
cruising through the woods...
and waiting for a little piece of something (anything!) edible to drop while o's dad was cleaning the kitchen...
this week he heads in for his man surgery...lampshade photos to come!

bottles, lights, and a little help...

o was kind enough to help me with the bottle project i was wanting to try...and actually ended up doing the entire thing because i lost my patience. later that day he got frustrated with project he was working on and i was able to step in and help...so we're even!

we washed the bottles and scraped off the labels...

drilled the holes in the bottles...

and then patiently snaking the lights into the bottles...

and voila...

and we found my camera cord! go teamwork!

friday thoughts...

isn't it about time we got a little giraffe. don't ya think, o? isn't this the definition of adorable...and maybe a little ugly, too? i love how the print just fades away as you get to his or her knees. and the mouth...it's all too much.

anyways...this weekend we are asking the universe to help us find someone to rent or buy our house in the east end (we need all the good wishes we can get), may get our tree, may partake in the east end stroll, will surely cruise around with hobnob, can't wait to catching up on silly shows, and will find my camera cord. what are you up to and what gift are you most exciting about giving this holiday season?

lunch with the girls...

yesterday i walked around the old port during lunch with christina and the little lady, followed by some snacks from standard baking. i just love hanging with these two! there is something so incredible about seeing a friend you've known and loved for years in a new role as a mom...and doing such a great job.

so miss christina, on the eve of your 30th hope you know just how proud i am to call you a friend and to be a part of your little one's life.

as a side note, does patagonia make this fleece jumper for adults?

flex shopping...

Retro Glasses Frames

as the year comes to a close, i'm realizing that i over-flexed...as in estimated too high on my flex spending account. it's a use it or lose it situation, so i'm thinking of some new glasses. i'm hoping for what i have now, with a little kick. or who knows...maybe something wild and crazy. suggestions welcome!

weekend project...

this weekend we are going to attempt the beauty above for our holiday mantle. the brown of the bottles will be perfect with our fireplace. i'm hoping for bottles of various heights and widths...and for minimal broken glass.

if you have any great bottle ideas let me know.

i promise to share pictures as soon as i find my missing camera cord. again! i know!

oh vacation...

ah the monday morning after a week long vacation...boo! i could use a few more weeks. anyone else? we had such a wonderful time these past few days...we took lots of walks in the woods and by the sea, hobbes went on his first hike, we got to be with family and friends, hobbes inherited lots of new dog toys, we settled into home, and we ate so many delicious meals.

thankful doesn't even begin to describe it!

home...

Cherry Heart Tarts
happy thanksgiving. we are busy helping my family cook for our big feast. mom always makes raspberry tarts with any leftover pie dough, so this picture reminded me of home. here's to dancing turkeys, peeling apples and potatoes, sitting together, a long walk with hobbes, and sneaking back into the kitchen a few hours later for leftovers.

i hope you are surrounded by that which you are thankful for today!

i'll be back on monday...and with lots of new photos!

comfort...

Nikon D60 with Nikkor AF-70-300mm
i've had a cough these past few days and o came down with a cold at the end of the weekend...our house is an infirmary. the other night we just wanted total comfort...and so we mustered all the strength we had and carried our futon into our big family room. we made a fire, got lots of pillows, had dinner in bed, curled up and watched a movie, made big mugs of throat coat tea, and kept adding logs throughout the night. hobbes loved nuzzling in between our feet. we were all so cozy.

after the movie we dozed in and out watching a show on pbs about john lennon and yoko ono. at the very end of the show during the scene following when lennon had been shot, hobbes sat straight up from sleeping and howled/sang along with the siren noises on the tv...a sad beatles fan.

you know you're in maine...

Blaze Orange Hunting Vest
when you are crafting a blaze orange vest for your little dog to wear. rather than spend $35 on something hobbes will outgrow, i got a blaze orange vest for $4 and i'm going to take a stab at making him something to wear as he runs through the woods.

i'll keep you posted...

in the woods...

sticx
this weekend we explored the many trails and wooded areas near our house. hobbes couldn't have been happier cruising through the woods, jumping over sticks, running through the mud, following scents, and being outside. i'm so happy just walking along as he checks in, zips past, and continues on.

in other exciting news i finally unpacked and in the process found my camera charger, which means some pictures of the house and hobbes pictures soon!

my new ride...

my new ride [only] has a tapedeck. so, when i'm home at my parents' house for thanksgiving i'm going to grab my collection of my old mix tapes. it will be like going back in time. i knew i was saving those tapes for a reason! 1993-1998 i'm coming for you. i'm actually really really excited.

sweet romance. sweet mixtapes. sweet dancing.

happy weekend.

p.s. it's friendsgiving this weekend.

oh the potential...

fortunately this cord with colorful felted bursts of color is sold out at anthropologie or else i would have gone on a major spending spree. this would have been perfect for our mantle or on a big christmas tree in our ultra white living room. or would look great on a brown paper package. it would also look cute as a collar on hobbes or as a leash for a holiday photo.

the good thing is that this is one of those items that simply looking at the photo is enough.
